How to Find What Makes People Tick - Finding Peoples HOT Button.
Finding Peoples HOT Button
What is a hot button? A hot button is something that you gather through your conversation about your ‘target’ that causes them to respond to it (the stimulus) with positive intensity. You can see the glee in their eyes or the surge in excitement. Whatever their reasons may be, it is your duty to discover it. A person’s hot button could be anything – it could be earning big bucks, helping others live a better life, impressing their spouses or parents, buying a new sports car or even revenge against a bitter enemy. It could be anything that tickles their fancy. Here are some tips on how to find out what their hot button is: - Don’t be shy to Ask. Sometimes we are afraid to ask someone about something because we fear we may look stupid in front of them or insult their intelligence. Don’t let that fear paralyze you because it never hurts to ask. What’s the worst that can happen, the other party biting your head off?
- Display enthusiasm when you ask them what they like to do and express genuine interest in it. If you were to fold your arms and half-close your eyes while asking someone, “So… you like computer games, eh?” you will probably expect a routine answer without pressing their hot button at all. Add enthusiasm to your networking ‘recipe’ and watch them light up.
- Smile to your ‘target’! Hand-in-hand with enthusiasm is a sincere smile to brighten up the atmosphere. You may have heard the term, “Smile, and the world will smile back at you J”
- Mirror the prospect’s body language. It sends the signal that you are ‘in-sync’ with the prospect and you can use it to subconsciously build rapport with them as they are sharing what their hot button about.
