Make People Feel Important
One of the best ways to get others to like you is to make them feel important. Make the other party feel like a star without insincere flattery. Everyone on this earth has a story to tell. Everyone has their claim to fame. And it is your opportunity to capitalize on it. Everyone, without exception, needs to feel that others recognize and acknowledge their existence – they want to be validated! It is hard-coded into their very being and grafted together with their self-esteem. Don’t try and hog the limelight. You must really convince yourself that other people are equally as important as you. It will remove your barriers and make you much more approachable. After all, if you don’t give a damn about others, why should they give a damn about you? Make sure you give others credit where it is due. Look at it this way – if you were the project manager of a highly successful project, you can either hog the limelight and talk about yourself (while others criticize you or feel discontented) or you can give the credit back to the team members who will in turn give you the credit as a great leader! Always learn to get along instead of competing with people. Healthy competition is good for productivity, but you don’t want to take others down a peg just to make yourself look taller. For example: If someone tells a funny joke to a crowd, don’t try and ‘top’ him by telling a funnier joke and making his joke seem less funny. This is human nature. What you take is frowned upon but what you give to others, they will give back to you 100 times. And most important of all, never try and correct a person in public. Before you think about correcting someone, ask yourself if it is REALLY important. If it isn’t, just let it go. If it is, make sure you reprimand in private but praise in public!
