What Are The Advantages Of Networking?
Now that we have established the importance of networking, let’s dwell deeper into what are the other advantages or benefits of being a good networker. Networking is important because you want access to ALL these people at your finger tips, especially when you are running your own business. You can’t do everything alone like a small business owner. Every big business owner manages lots of employees who specialize in doing what they (hopefully) do best while the ‘boss’ networks with suppliers, contractors, sub-contractors, middle-men, customers and people who handle the support. The key point is this – if you build a large network with those who are best at what they do, you are leveraging on their expertise and influence. After all, you don’t have the time to do everything by yourself. Trust is very hard to come by these days. Once you have relationships with other people, they automatically give their business or their services to you and you can save yourself a lot of time soliciting new customers or hiring new talent to do the job. Basically, networking is also very important in order to build relationships that will help you get to where you want faster. (In this case, earning money and building a large business.)
Even if you are an employee, having connections is also very important because someone, somewhere might recommend you to another company who will give you a better position or a higher pay. You might even want to build a strong relationship with your boss – it might make the difference between getting a promotion and remaining at the same position for the next 20 years! Hey, even people who ‘suck up’ to their boss’ secretary know that that is the way up the corporate ladder! (Ask a few corporate executive and they will tell you secretly that that’s what they did and it definitely paid off J ) Knowing people and building strong relationships with them will also protect you against back-stabbers. Your friends will be there to defend you against the back-stabber while you are absent. Never, ever neglect the power of networking with virtually ANYONE. You will never know when you might need that person’s help one day. For example: If you treat the cleaning lady at your office with kindness, she will remember you and keep your place nice and tidy (which could be a small but necessary contribution to your success someday) or tell your co-workers or superiors what a great person you are.
