Things You Cannot Afford to Save On.

12 Things You Can’t Afford to Save On

Even though this book teaches you how to save money, there are some things that you must NOT save on as it will be even more detrimental to your long term financial goals.

  • Car maintenance. Most people who scrimp on car expenses often lead to worse problems – like overhauls. If you wait too long to change your oil, swap your filters or investigate that weird grinding noise, very soon you will be spending much more than fixing it now.
  • If you have a vehicle, you should invest some effort in finding a good, reliable mechanic and then make sure your budget includes money for regular maintenance and repairs.
  • Phone calls. You may be very busy in your work and your job, but once in a while, call up an old friend and keep in touch. You will never know that you might need people one day. It would be very insincere to call up an old friend that you haven’t spoke to in years only if you need their help. Phone calls give the personal touch.
  • Work clothes. These are clothes you wear everyday. Make sure you get clothes with good quality or else you will find yourself buying three times as many clothes even though you bought one at half price. It doesn’t need to be designer clothes. Just make sure the quality is good enough and you will save more in the long run.
  • Get the BEST Computer memory or RAM. Get a minimum of 2 gigabytes of random-access memory (RAM), the kind of memory that determines how quickly your machine loads and runs programs – 200 gigabytes of hard-drive space to store music, video and photos. If you try and scrimp on computer memory, you will find yourself upgrading more and more often due to the demands of computers nowadays. You could save lots of money by buying ONE good RAM than two lousy ones.
  • The same applies for hard disks as well as other computer parts.
  • Family safety. Smoke detectors and sprinklers are much cheaper than replacing a burning house.
  • Also, you can’t put a price tag on a person’s life.
  • Health. Millions of Americans are losing their lives to diseases everyday. Many are getting younger and younger. If you scrimp on health insurance, your hospital fees will be exorbitant and so will the funeral fees.
  • Get some exercise and avoid obesity. If you can, invest in health supplements or consult a doctor. Check your company’s health plan.
  • Internet access. Internet access is getting cheaper and cheaper nowadays. In some parts of Asia, broadband connection is even cheaper than a dial-up modem when it comes to overall usage.
  • In most areas, the price for high-speed Internet access has dropped significantly as competition between cable and DSL providers heats up. In some cities, you can get basic broadband for less than $20 a month.
  • Remember that time is money, and you can’t afford to sit at a computer all day waiting for your page to load on your browser using slow dial-up connection.
  • Home inspections. Some people are willing to spend a fortune on their home but are not willing to spend a few hundred dollars on an inspector who could warn them that they're throwing their money away.
Remember, house repairs and TERMITES could pose to be a real problem even for houses that look beautiful on the outside.
  • Beds and Mattresses. You can never put a price tag on a good night’s sleep.
  • Your teenagers’ cars. Safety may be even more important in your kid's car than in the family vehicle. Young kids can’t really drive since they lack the experience and they tend to be reckless.
  • Their crash and fatality rate is much higher than any other age group, overall and per mile driven. So they're more likely to need airbags, restraint systems, roll bars and crumple zones rather than the nagging sound of their parents.
  • Networking Seminars. In your line of work, don’t neglect networking seminars. For a few hundred bucks, you can network with some of the top people in your industry. The world is very cold. Nobody gives a damn about you if you are nothing but a stranger.
  • Go out and meet people and it would potentially help your business dealings.
  • Ethics. ALWAYS BE ETHICAL! Do you understand business at the speed of trust? If you learn that it is better to spend more to maintain a good integrity than take the easy way out in business deals, you know that you must always be ethical.
  • People will remember being scammed by something 10 years ago so never ever pull a fast-one on others.
